Zoe saw the dentist a few weeks ago because of tooth crowding. She is genetically predisposed to crowded teeth, but because of the microcephaly, her head will likely not grow enough to accommodate all of her adult teeth. She was referred to a pediatric orthodontist in town.
It went well. We got her xrays, a wax imprint, but couldn't get the plaster one, so we'll try again next time. But then we met the Orthodontist.
He told us a story about a doctor at the Children's hospital just outside of town here who had a different method of teaching the medical students than what is widely accepted. He was criticised for it, but his students tend to fare better and retain more information with his method. The Orthodontist explained that he studied until this professor and that one thing stuck in to his mind.
Orthodontics will be a defining pathway to diagnosing children with growth issues
If this is the case, it can explain why Zoe was born with a normal head circumference, which slowly decreased in growth rate, and then stopped over time. The treatment would be hormone therapy which could help her to grow, possibly make her brain grow, and help with her developmental delays. It could also potentially eliminate her anhidrosis and immersion hypothermia.
The Orthodontist is referring her back to the Children's Hospital for hormone testing, and will also be performing a hand and wrist xray to send to another specialist to analyze her bone age.
Given that the last 5 years of testing has lead us nowhere, I'm not expecting any answers, but I'm cautiously optimistic that the new revelation, with a easy treatment solution, may hold some answers for Zoe...FINALLY.
